Here's Bob's report on the May Day 2007 walk:

"It’s May 1st and the time is approaching 05:00 am, and 18 members of the Group are gathering on Box Hill. As we set off on a 5 mile walk we soon pause at the viewpoint and wait for the occasion we have come to enjoy. In the distance we start to hear music, but it’s not the radio that’s disturbing the perfect silence of early morning, it’s five groups of Morris dancers parading along the road and halting just above the viewpoint. Each group dances to welcome the new rising sun as part of traditional May Day celebrations.

The lead group of dancers The Ewell St. Mary’s Morris Men are in red and white, and a ladies dance group are in purple and dance with ribbon-covered hoops. The other dance groups, Marlings Morris Men, Spring Grove Morris Men, Offspring Morris and Rampant Roosters, take their turn in brightly coloured costumes.

We watched their performances before continuing our walk via Ashurst Outdoor Activity centre and on to Juniper Bottom for a rest before the long climb back up the hill to Juniper Top. The view was spectacular at that time, still only 07:00 am and the sky was clear blue, and not a sound to be heard beyond the awakening birds. After catching our breath we headed on through the woods back to the car park at Fort Cottages.

Several of us headed down the Zig Zag road to Rykers Café at the bottom for a well earned Full English Breakfast. A mad morning of fun, fresh air, wonderful views and still the rest of the day to enjoy. Let’s do it again next year!"
